Although David passed away in such good circumstances, he was far too young to die for these days, and was such a remarkable person. It was a real privilege to know him and he helped and encouraged me enormously. Without him surely Ivan Illich’s thought would not have reached its crucial final form. David was far more than a mere promoter; in the end more a co-elaborator. Along with Charles Taylor, Illich’s legacy is surely now much indebted to Canadians!
